Abstract:There are three steps in the process of translating English metaphors into Chinese: understanding, expression and checking. The most critical aspect of translation is choosing the right method to use: literal translation, free translation and the combination of the two. These three methods can also be used in translating English metaphors, where either the original comparison is used, or a new comparison is created, or the comparison is completely left out but the meaning is kept.
