Abstract: Written against the backgrounds of the French Revolution, A Tale of Two Cities exposes the mutilation from feudalism, the oppression of human nature and the evils of the feudal aristocracy as well, which reflects the sharp class antagonism and struggle. From the perspective of bourgeoisie humanism, Charles Dickens not only sympathizes with the people for their miseries and sufferings, but also opposes to the tempestuous Revolution. He believes that the society could be ameliorated by some enlightened monarch through reform and social antagonism and class struggle be alleviated through the proposition of fraternity and forgiveness. The spirit of humanism is manifested and embodied on two types of people one represent of justice while others are on behalf of evil. By the description of these two types of characters, Dickens also shows the limits of his humanism.
