Abstract: Katherine Mansfield is a woman writer with the reputation of “a master of short stories”. In her stories, psychological insight is profound. Katherine Mansfield is good at penetrating into characters’ inner world. Each character, no matter who he or she is, pure girl, hypocritical woman or poor people, Katherine Mansfield can show their deep feelings and thoughts successfully. This paper attempts to explore the ways for the artistic success in the stories. It holds that there are three main reasons which contribute to the success. First, Katherine Mansfield often uses comparison and contrast, that is, uses minor characters as a foil to the main characters’ inner world; second, Katherine Mansfield is good at describing minute details in order to show the characters’ feelings; third, symbolism is constantly used in Mansfield’s works.

摘要：凯瑟琳·曼斯菲尔德是一位以“短篇小说大师”著称的女作家，在她的作品里，心理描写非常生动、形象而细腻。凯瑟琳·曼斯菲尔德擅于剖析人物心理，向读者展示人物复杂的内心世界。不管是天真纯洁的少女还是虚伪做作的妇女，或是生活落魄的穷人，在凯瑟琳·曼斯菲尔德的笔下，他们都栩栩如生，有血有肉。凯瑟琳·曼斯菲尔德主要运用三种方法刻画人物的心理。第一，用次要人物作为衬托以凸显主要人物的内心世界。第二，通过对日常琐事的详细描写来显示人物的心理。第三，在小说中普遍运用象征手法。
