1 Introduction
1.1 The background of enterprise culture
The notion of ‘enterprise culture’ came out in the United Kingdom as a central core in the political thought under the Margaret Thatcher's administration. The notion represented a profound change from the Keynesian welfare state to a deliberate attempt at cultural restructuring and engineering based on the neo-liberal model of the entrepreneurial self. It is a shift which is characterized as a moving from a ‘culture of dependency’ to ‘self-reliance’. In education, this shift takes the form of the ‘enterprise education’ and the ‘enterprise curriculum’. From the perspective of Michel Foucault, this paper analyses the ‘generalization of an ‘enterprise form’ to all forms of conduction’ (Burchell) and the way in which the promotion of an enterprise culture has become a style of governmental characteristic of both neoliberals and Third Way politics.
