Chapter 1 Introduction 

1.1  The Background of Research 
Foreign  language  teaching  methods  can  be  summarized  as  follows.  (Hu  Zhuanglin,  2017  and  Shu Baimei,  2017)  Firstly,  the  English  teaching  is  based  on  grammar  or  translation  exercises.  That  is  the traditional approach. It‘s full of rules, explanations, definitions, etc. Most of learners feel boring and even have no interest in learning language. Secondly, as we know, teaching language usually focuses on listening and  speaking  in  the  classrooms,  as  far  as  they  are  concerned,  the  listening  and  speaking  skills  are considered  very  important.  There  are  a  lot  of  activities  about  listening  and  speaking  in  classrooms  to improve  learners‘  oral  comprehension  and  spoken  language.  Thirdly,  the  four  basic  skills  which  are listening, speaking, reading and writing are equally important. Learning is a long process, these four skills have different emphasis in different time, like a baby learning to talk. In the beginning, the listening will be taken more time than the speaking. One or two years later, reading and writing will be taught. Teachers use English  to  explain  everything  for  students  if  necessary  they  use  a  little  Chinese.  On  account  of  lacking English  resources  and  surroundings,  Most  of  learners  in  our  country  have  no  opportunity  to  practice English  with  foreigners.  Reading  skill  is  sometimes  regarded  as  a  relatively  important  one  to  learn.  To improve reading skills, it needs us to master grammar and vocabulary, so the Grammar-Translation Method is popular in some classrooms. No  matter  what  method  is  adopted,  writing-to-learn  needs  to  get  enough  attention.  The  thesis emphasizes  writing  as  a  mode  of  learning  (Emig,  1977),  reports  have  shown  that  writing-to-learn  can promote foreign language learning and teaching for college and high school students. However, there were few studies that refer to junior middle school students. This  study  attempts  to  apply  writing-to-learn  to  English  teaching  in  order  to  improve  the  present complexion of low efficiency and time consuming in junior high schools.

1.2 The Aims of the Present Research 
The aim of the thesis is to think of writing as a breakthrough. That is to say, the approach is a kind of learning, which are based on writing. There are many different teaching methods, there are not the same surroundings and characters of the students.
