Chapter One Introduction

Language  and  culture  are  inseparable,  learning  a  foreign  language  means learning  a  foreign  civilization  and  culture.  What’s  more,  cultural  awareness  is  the assurance of using language appropriately. Mistakes have frequently been made when we  use  English.  That  is  because  people  are  lack  of  English  culture  knowledge  of English-speaking countries’. Much research has been done about it, but what and how to teach English culture in middle schools still needs systematic studying. 

1.1 Background of the study 
With  the  continuous  deepening  of  Chinese  reform  and  opening  up,  the construction of socialism with Chinese characteristics has achieved great success, the  compulsory Education in China has made great achievements. In the process of English teaching,  the  progress  is  very  obvious,  the  quality  of  English  teaching  has  also  been greatly  improved,  the  students’  English  scores  have  been  improved  significantly. However,  Chinese  current  college  entrance  examination  and  the  senior  high  school entrance  examination  system  restrict  the  further  development  of  English  teaching. English  teachers  in  general  still  pay  attention  to  systematically  explain  English language knowledge, to ask students to memorize English language points repeatedly and  to  do  more  exercises  mechanically,  but  lack  of  cultivation  of  students’  ability  of using English. At the same time, students are short of guiding to understand and master English  culture  background  knowledge.  In  the  economic  globalization,  a  country’s economic crisis can be a disaster for the whole world, it can be seen that the economy is closely linked all over the world. Meanwhile cultural connections around the world are  increasing,  even  are  strengthening  continuously.  That  puts  forward  higher requirements  on  English  teaching.  Facing  such  opportunities  and  challenges,  The National English curriculum for compulsory Education points out that the overall goal of  English  course  in  basic  education  stage  is  to  cultivate  students’  comprehensive ability  of  using  language.  (教育部全日制义务教育课程标准(实验稿):21)  The language  knowledge,  language  skills,  learning  strategies,  emotion  and  attitude,  and cultural  awareness,  the  overall  development  of  quality  are  the  foundation  for  the formation of a comprehensive language using ability.
