1.1 Background and Significance of the Research

As the basic international language,English serves as a role of the bridge that connects one and another to promote the win-winsituation. Nowadays, English has become a compulsory subject for students in China since theenrollment in middle schools, with the result of people's awareness of its significance.However, the outcome of middle school students' English teaching is not satisfactory. For along time, English teachers are encouraged to use English as much as possible in class, for thefact that the biggest obstacle for English learners in China is the lack of exposure to Englishlanguage environments, in other words, Chinese interferes the learning of English as a foreignlanguage. As a result, in English class, most teachers would help students have access to English,the target language, as much as possible in order to get rid of the interference of the nativelanguage. Indeed, this kind of language teaching is supported by Krashen's Input Hypothesis,which emphasizes the significance of the comprehensible and sufficient input of target languageand it do works on the improvement of students' English to some extend. Meanwhile, the mindsof the speakers are not blank sheets when in a foreign language learning, but have alreadyequipped with systematic knowledge of their mother language in them. Therefore, they willinevitably be influenced by their mother tongue in the process of learning the foreign language.What's more, owing to the lack of understanding on the structure of the target language and itslanguage to the target language, thus the learning outcome seems not so desirable in the actualEnglish teaching practice for English-only-class in middle school.
In the past decades, extensive researches have been done aiming to work out influences thatthe mother language exerts on foreign language learning. It experiences such a process from itsprevailing of contrastive analysis period, its decline in interlanguage period, and its revival since1980s. Negative transfer is the draws great attention over the course of research time, and fewresearchers consider the research of the positive transfer. The researches are mainly focused onanalysis of the difficulties and the errors occurred in the process of foreign language learning. Ifany, they are seldom used in related with actual teaching. While during the practical learningprocess, there are many students feeling that they learn English with the help of Chinese in manyoccasions.
