1. Introduction Students’ need, as is known to all, plays a critical role in the English teaching in the middle school. “The need can inspire a person’s activities, and it is the basic power for him to take up any work.”(波果斯洛夫基等, 1979:69) Without taking them into consideration, the given lecture or class, to some extents, is in vain, and even of great harm to students. With the rapid development of education, the factor that students’ need attracts more and more attention as well as consideration. However, there are still a great number of teachers to puzzle as they do not know how to discern their students’ need, let alone take effective measures to guide them to the success. Xiao Ming was one of my junior middle school students .He was quite shy, timid and introverted. Obviously, he was eager to be given more encouragement and confidence, but our English teacher, Mrs. Wang, still did not understand his need at all, and she always criticized him for his poor performance in English learning. Then he was tired of attending English class and began to play truant. Finally, he became a bad boy. Therefore, we can see it clearly that discerning students’ need is of great benefit to the successful English teaching in the middle school. This paper mainly talks about discerning students’ need by watching, listening and talking aspects, in hopes of offering those inexperienced teachers some effective methods to discern their students’ need. 2. The Significance of Discerning Students’ Need in English Teaching in the Middle School Students’need, as is known to all, plays a critical role in the middle school’s teaching. “A teacher’s insight is of great significance to the successful teaching, for in our daily life and learning process, what our students think, must be showed or expressed in different manners or forms. And only if we have a good understanding of their mentalities can we guide them effectively.”(孟庆轩,1987:81) If an English teacher can not adopt the reasonable attitude toward them, the consequence, definitely, not only be harmful to the successful teaching but also his students’ learning. In order state the role of students’ need clearly in the middle school’s teaching, the author of this paper would like to discuss it from the different perspectives: the harm from ignoring students’ need in the middle school and the result from paying more attention to students’ need. And the English teacher, to some degree, just is a guide as well as an assistant, who is of great help to his students on their way to English learning. As a matter of fact, different students have different ideas, wishes, dreams and other expectancy.
