The paper takes high school English teaching as an example to discuss application of a new teaching method in high school English teaching. As we all know, language is a tool of communication. Communication is a process of expression with active mind. Majority Chinese students start to study English in their middle school time. But the goal of learning English is to take examinations, in other words, to fulfill paper, not for communication, but only for examination. In order to enter college gates, they cram English words and grammars without flexibility. As a result, majority are unable to speak English, even a complete sentence. To improve English speaking ability, and change the bad situation, what should be done? Judging from some present student’s investigations, there are some prevailing issues in high school English class such as the monotonous teaching, student’s study interest is difficult to enhance. For the majority of students hold a positive attitude towards the content of English teaching, but as for the form of it most are not quite satisfied with because of the absolute abstract form of the delivery of textbooks, singleness, inflexibility, making class atmosphere boring. The distance is extremely far between the present teaching form and that, which students expect to be lively and interesting. Therefore, it is a key point in English teaching reform to change the present “rigid theorizing” teaching way into more colorful one drawing close to life which exerts initiative of students. Study-discuss Teaching Methodology is the teaching way which is worth attempting. The paper will talk about the utilization of study—discuss teaching methodology: five specific steps of its application, advantages and obstacles of its application, points teachers should pay attention to and teaching aids used in it. 2 Students independent learning ability as the utilization condition of Study-discuss Teaching Methodology Under teacher's instruction the high-school student independent studying is the important condition of the utilization of Study-discuss teaching Methodology. Whether students in high school have independent learning capability, opinions are widely different. I believe that high school students have independent learning of preliminary ability. On whether high-school student have independent learning capability, a questionnaire survey was made.
