Chapter One: Introduction


1.1 Research Background
Once I remembered that my teacher told me an interesting story. One day when he was in astreet, he saw a foreigner and another two Chinese women. At that moment, the women said,“Look that is a foreigner.” Then this foreigner turned back and replied, “You are realforeigners.” This short story sounds funny, but it reflects a problem and a phenomenon, that is,if you are surprised to look at a foreigner in the street, you are really astonished by others. Weoften see foreigners everywhere and they don’t consider themselves as the foreigners anylonger, which shows that our earth becomes smaller and smaller and we live with variouskinds of races and nationalities frequently. So the communications among people andcountries become more frequent and necessary. China has the largest population in the worldand naturally Chinese is the language spoken by the most persons. But English, as a popularlanguage, tends to be more global. In order to understand and communicate smoothly, it isnecessary for us to know and grasp the cultural knowledge of the foreign countries.Communication is a form of cultural characteristics. In the global environment, a person’ssuccess depends on skilled communicative competence and efficiency. The purpose ofcultivation of intercultural communicative competence is to improve people’s communicativeskills with other people from different countries effectively and correctly. Thus, interculturalresearch should be added into foreign language teaching. Intercultural research includesintercultural awareness, intercultural knowledge and intercultural communicative competence.Therefore Chinese Educational Ministry issued New Senior High School CurriculumStandard in 2017. In the Standard, it is firstly proposed that cultural consciousness, togetherwith language knowledge, learning strategy and emotional attitude they are put into fivecurriculum aims. And it stresses that English curriculum standard of the basic education is tocultivate students’ competences of comprehensive language application. The comprehensivecompetence demands students not only to have basic language knowledge and culturalknowledge, but to have practical communicative competence, esp. interculturalcommunicative competence. At the same time, our English teachers will face to explore theproper cultural teaching methods that must be suitable to the specific teaching context in orderto ensure the smooth implement of new English curriculum.

1.2 Research Purposes and Significance
The Senior High School English Textbooks published by Foreign Language Teaching andResearch Press was examined and qualified by Textbook Committee in 2017 according to theStandard. Now many provinces and areas use the textbooks. So I choose these textbooks asmy research subjects in this paper.With the development of China’s modernization and its entry to WTO, the Englishcommunicative ability of students needs to be improved if they want to find a good job in thefuture. As we all know, middle school phase is an important one for the Chinese students tolearn English, so it has become very important to improve the intercultural communicativecompetence of the middle school students. In our schools, some students may choose to workin the corporations invested by foreign countries and others want to be interpreters.
