1.1Research Background
Teaching has an important part. That is English vocabulary teaching. The basis forlearning English acquires a certain amount of vocabulary. Canale and Swai said that,language skills are a vital part of communicative competence, and the vocabulary is one partof the core of communicative language ability. Vocabulary ability, directly affects a person’slistening, speaking, reading, writing, translation ability. When we master the sufficientvocabulary, then we can understand and read the words and articles of others, express ourideas freely, communicate successfully with others. On the contrary, people face thecommunication difficulties and obstacles are mostly caused by lack of vocabulary. In a sense,vocabulary level is a parameter to measure the level of a person’s language ability, thusvocabulary teaching should occupy an important position in English teaching. Especially atthe university, students have learned the basic rules of English grammar in high school.Vocabulary began to restrict further development of students’ English level, so at collegestrengthen vocabulary learning ability should be one of the English teaching’s characteristics,which is different from the high school English teaching. English vocabulary teaching is oneaspect of teaching. That is worth to spend more time and energy to study and explore it. Thisis requirements of development and reality. With the further deepening of China’s reform andopening up, joining the WTO, a high level of college English is becoming increasinglyimportant in the nation-building and personal development. Their vocabulary ability reflectsthe level of their English proficiency. Foreign language curriculums’ syllabus and variousexaminations’ syllabus, regard the vocabulary size as the basis of assessments. For example,in the CET exam the reading comprehension essays are based primarily on the amount ofvocabulary. The reading occupy a large proportion, thus the poor vocabulary level restrict theaccuracy of understanding the reading part. That is why most of the students get a low score.The writing section is even more highlighted the poor performance of most students’vocabulary ability. They can not accurately express themselves in English.

1.2 Purpose and Significant of the Study
In actual teaching, many teachers emphasize too much on the grammar and sentenceexplanation and practice. They neglect to teach vocabulary and let students learn the words,and recite the vocabulary after class by themselves. This leads the vocabulary teaching tobecome the weak part. The students' vocabulary knowledge is little. Not only the efficiencyof the memorizing word is very low, but even the basic meaning of common terms havemastered inaccurate, incomplete. So many students spend a lot of time and effort onremembering the words by the syllabus. Their oral English is still poor. How to improveefficiency of the vocabulary learning and, expand vocabulary size? This have became the“bottlenecks” in our country. Although in the field of foreign language teaching, thevocabulary teaching starts late. With the development of international exchanges, more andmore people are beginning to realize the existence of problems English vocabulary teachingat college.
