1.1 Background of research
In Sep.2017, the national ministry of education promulgated “College EnglishSyllabus” which highlighted improving student’s English comprehensive ability. It was thefirst time to propose the basic requirements for such skills as speaking, reading, writing andtranslation. In recent years, there are new requirements of CET4 and CET6 for writing skills,which request students to write a complete and well-organized 120-150 or 150-180 wordsessay in clear order. Thus many experts and scholars believe that writing ability has graduallybecome one of the core abilities that should be highlighted in Foreign Language Teaching,which requires us to attach importance to the writing ability improvement in college Englishteaching.For most Chinese students, it is not easy to write an English article in specified timewith appropriate content, correct grammar and reasonable results. There are mainly twoproblems.First, as for the problem of how to write, students do not know how to start writing anddo not have a targeted object. There are also two reasons for this problem. One, due to smallvocabulary, students can not use accurate words to express their ideas. The other reason isstudents have ideas in their mind, but they do not know how to write and enrich the paragraphcontent.Second, students can not write well. The most prominent manifestation is Chinglish, nologic, and disorder grammar. There are mainly two reasons causing above phenomenon. Thefirst reason is no clear idea of writing and too arbitrary, which easily lead to a tricky question.The second reason is lacking understanding of English sentence characteristics and overalldiscourse structure. Students organize article according to Chinese habits, which results in thewhole article full of Chinglish.

1.2 The significance and purposes of research
Memetics is a new pragmatic theory which provides a new thought in college Englishteaching and enlightens teachers to explore new teaching methods to improve the writingproficiency of students. In previous studies, scholars pay much attention on the application ofmemetics on writing training and vocabulary learning. In writing training, researchersemphasize the structure imitation through the analysis of several writing templates. Invocabulary learning, authors put the emphasis on the effects of memetics’ application on theoutput of vocabulary. However, there is no special writing curriculum for college students ofnon-English major. So in this study, writing training is brought into college English class onthe basis of memetics theory. In the course of learning textbook, positive words,common-used phrases and sentences, and paragraphs of typical structure will be selected aslanguage memes. In order to change language memes into the successful memes,memorization plays a critical role in the language learning.In this thesis, the author puts the four stages of meme lifecycle and the two patterns ofmeme transmission into English teaching of experiment class, and advocates the studentsputting what they have learned into composition writing, intending to prove that memeticsteaching method does exert positive effect on improving writing proficiency. After dataanalysis and composition analysis on post-test, the author aims to answer the questions,namely: 1.
