Abstract

The Harry Potter fantasy series written by J. K. Rowling are typical children literature works aimed at intended children readers. However, without correct guidance it is hard for translators to translate a children literature work according to children’s viewpoints. As an important translating theory, the Skopostheorie highlights the role played by readers during the process of translation, which can be seen as a good guidance for translators to concentrate on children readers. Therefore, under the framework of Skopostheorie, this paper tries to make a contrastive study of two Chinese versions of Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire from the perspective of Skopostheorie to conclude useful and practice translating strategies for children readers.
Firstly, the author briefly explains the purpose of writing this paper. Moreover, the author reviews the emergence and development of Skopostheorie and illustrates a concise introduction to three main rules involved in the Skopostheorie. After exploring different stages of development and features of children’s literature translation, the paper tries to apply Skopostheorie into the realm of translating works for children to make an effort to improve the uneven quality of literature works in children market.
The third section is the essential part of the paper which puts two translated versions of the children’s novel Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire into the framework of Skopostheorie in terms of three language levels - lexicon, syntax and rhetoric devices, and points out that works of children’s literature can be successful when their translating strategies confirm to serve its topmost Skopos [purpose] - children readers.
At last, based on the above contrastive analysis, the author elicits some effective translating strategies concerning the translation of children’s literature, such as application of colloquialism, reduplication words and domestication, to serve the target readers - children. The paper hereby affirms the crucial role Skopostheorie plays in translating children’s literature works as well.
