1. Introduction
Writing is one of the most important means of communication with increasingly frequent; contact between different cultures. Writing in foreign language is widely needed in various fields in China. How to develop good writing skills and write successfully across cultures has become the major problem for Chinese English learners.
In college, many students excel in reading and grammar, but they do not have the same proficiency in writing, which is considered to be the most difficult language skill. In fact, Chinese students apply what they have learned in Chinese writing to English writing unconsciously. So, writing in English has drawn more and more attention of teachers and researchers. They all tried to find where the problems lie and how to improve students’ writing ability. Writing in a foreign language is an interaction of language, thinking and culture. Since students learned how to writing in English after they have acquired their mother tongue, which has largely shaped their thinking patterns, they tend to carry their Chinese way of thinking into their English writing. Owing to the increasingly frequent communication with western countries and the wide use of English in China, Chinese is inevitably influenced by English and its culture. Chinese students get more English exposures than ever before. They started to learn English in, even before primary school. And they have more access to English through books, media, and communication with foreign friends. Therefore, we need to analyze students’ writing in this new situation.
