1. Introduction
Chinglish is a concept first put forward by Mr. Ge Chuangui in the early 1980s. It is a language with lots of Chinese characteristics which exists in the English learning process among Chinese learners. For instance, in English writing, Chinese learners always make a sketch in Chinese before and then translate it one sentence after another (even word for word) into English mechanically. As a result, language with lots of Chinese characteristics can be found everywhere and it cannot be accepted by native speakers. Recently, Chinglish has been a hot issue among scholars. With the development of economy and the increase of communications between China and Western countries, Chinese-English translation has become more and more important. However, Chinglish is always a major problem affecting the quality of translation works. So it is obvious for researchers to see the importance of studying Chinglish.
There have been lots of research outcomes of the genetic causes of Chinglish during these years. The limits of elementary English teaching lead to the limits of cognitive mode, which make learners rely much on their mother tongue. Besides, the differences of syntax between Chinese and English also count (Zhou You, 2017). Some scholars used Piaget’s principles of genetic epistemology to explain the formation (Ma Qinglin & Ji Jianfen, 2017). Among all the studies, the theory of language transfer in Second Language Acquisition (SLA) is a basic element. According to scholars’ research, 51% English errors made by Chinese speaking adults are because of mother tongue interference. Therefore, a main cause of Chinglish lies in mother tongue interference, also being called Negative Transfer. This text will analyze the causes of Chinglish in writing at the perspective of vocabulary, grammar and discourse, while several approaches to avoid that will be provided.
