Abstract:
Fortress Besieged, the only novel written by Qian Zhongshu, describes a scholar's tragedy both in career and marriage. When the novel first came out in the 1940s, it was a real shocker and drew wide attention. David Lodge is a popular critic and writer in the west and is recognized as a fine example of School Literature. Small World is often regarded as a British style of Fortress Besieged, and it’s a charming novel which enjoys great popularity. This thesis tries to compare the two novels in order to gain a deeper understanding of the novels as well as the cultures and ideas behind the novels. The thesis first presents an introduction of Qian Zhongshu and David Lodge’s life and experience, together with a brief survey and introduction of Fortress Besieged and Small World. This is followed by an explanation of modernism and postmodernism and how they are related to Fortress Besieged and Small World. Then the similarities and differences in the two novels are presented with a view to the writing techniques as well as the narrative modes of the two novels. With the analysis above, the paper comes to the conclusion that that two novels both have important impact on their own societies and literatures and that it reveals different aspects of intellectual life in different cultures.

《围城》是钱钟书先生唯一的一部长篇小说，用生动幽默诙谐的语言表现了一个知识分子在事业和在婚姻生活上屡次碰壁的悲剧式经历。这部著作在20世纪40年代出版以来就备受瞩目，并且在40年后又能够重新引起轰动。《小世界》的作者戴维·洛奇是一位享誉世界的英国文学批评家兼小说家。《小世界》则是一部“非凡的、妙趣横生的”学者小说。它被公认为是学院派文学的代表作，被誉为“英国版的《围城》”，其魅力及受欢迎程度可见一斑。这篇论文旨在比较两部小说来获得对这两部小说更深的理解以及了解他们背后的文化和思想。论文首先介绍了钱钟书和戴维洛奇的生活和经历，英语论文范文，简要介绍了《围城》和《小世界》。接下来解释了现代主义和后现代主义以及他们和《围城》与《小世界》的联系。之后略论了这两部小说的写作手法和叙述模式。综合略论，这篇论文总结了这两部小说对社会和文学产生的作用以及从不同的文化角度展现了学者生活。

1 Introduction
Qian Zhongshu was born in 1910 and died in1998. On one level, Fortress Besieged has the color of autobiography. Fortress Besieged was written in 1946, the contents of the book is set in 1937 and the years after, it is the period that China suffered under Japanese imperialism. The protagonist of the novel is a group of intellectuals represented by Fang Hongjian, especially some young people from overseas. Qian Zhongshu, like Fang Hongjian, was born in a family of scholar. But the difference is Qian Zhongshu is an accomplished scholar and he is strong influence on China literature.
