Abstract:
Alice Walk is one of the most prominent and influential black female writers, whose famous novel—The Color Purple has attracted great attention in the world. The novel not only shows the way in which the black females break away from double oppressions and reconstruct their identities, but also covers many traditional African cultural images, such as quilt-making, blues, African architecture, religious belief and clothing customs. From the viewpoint of the images in the novel, the paper makes a tentative study on how the black females redefine their own values and rebuild their self-confidence. In The Color Purple, the cultural images are the black women’s spiritual world, they love and worship their cultural world. It is the cultural images that arouse the black females’ self-consciousness, give them confidence and courage to get free from the double discriminations. It is the cultural images that bring the black females together, giving them the chance to understand and encourage each other, strengthen sisterhood among them. The unique cultural image gives the black females inspiration and creativity to rebuild their new lives, makes them complete the magnificent transformation from being numb and weak to being thoughtful and tough, and helps them to realize their dreams. The black females’ success proves that the cultural images are the major motivation on the way to reconstructing their self-identities.
