Abstract
Jane Austen is one of the greatest representatives of English realistic female novelists in the eighteenth and nineteenth century. The consideration about women’s merit can be found in her works, which is the most distinguished feature of her works. Sense and sensibility is her first published novel in which Austen voices her pursuit of ideal marriage. In this novel, Austen uses many various narrative writing skills to express her anti-tradition feelings toward the low status and unfair treatment to female. In terms of narrative content, she chooses private narrative to complete the dramatic plot of this novel. Different from the male writing tradition, Austen puts women in the center of her novel sense and Sensibility to describe their daily life. Austen does not convey her attitude straightly. In this way of writing, the narrator does not make communication with the ordinary readers. Although the fact is that she uses covert narrator voice to tell the story, it does not mean that she loses the author’s authority.
The thesis interprets Sense and Sensibility from the perspective of narrative strategies. It consists of four chapters. Chapter one introduces the author, the plot and theme of the novel, and makes literature review in domestic and overseas briefly. Chapter two reviews the theory and development of narratology. Chapter three looks at the narrative structure of this novel and narrative voice employed in this novel. The last one is a summary of the whole thesis.
