Abstract:

The Joy Luck Club written by famous Chinese-American woman writer Amy Tan described the process of cultural conflict, understanding, and coexistence between four Chinese mothers living in the United States and their daughters. This thesis made a preliminary analysis of Chinese dreams and American dreams which were embodied in the novel, and then made a further analysis of Chinese and western cultural conflict and coexistence reflected by the novel. In the thesis, the author based on the four pairs of mother and daughter who appeared in the novel and divided the main body of the thesis into four parts. Furthermore, the author elaborated mothers’ Chinese dreams and daughters’ American dreams in each section. Chinese dreams and American dreams are the cultural roots of cultural phenomena which were analyzed in the thesis. The conflicts between mothers and daughters are the microcosm of the collision of two different cultures. Because of the presence of blood kinship, mothers and daughters were tolerant to each other, and they could be in harmony, and the two different cultures could coexist in a complex environment.

Key words: Chinese dreams; American dreams; cultural roots; collision; coexistence

Amy Tan is another prominent writer after Maxine Hong Kingston in the Chinese American literature. She was born on Feb. 19th 1952 in Oakland, California. Both of her parents were Chinese immigrants. Like other Chinese Americans, She grew up surrounded by influences from both Chinese and American cultures. In addition, Amy Tan’s childhood filled with confusion to her cultural identity. There seemed to be countless contradictions in her life between her ethnicity and the western mainstream culture in which she was educated.
