Abstract
F. Scott Fitzgerald (1986-1940), one of the most famous writers in American literature in the 1920s, is known as the spokesman and laureate of the Jazz Age. The Great Gatsby, his masterpiece, depicts a vivid picture of the Jazz Age. It is obvious that the women characters in The Great Gatsby are quite secondary to the males. As Fitzgerald himself said, the novel was a “man’s book” and the women are “emotionally passive”. With the development of feminist literary criticism during the last few decades, it is necessary to reread the text from a new perspective.
The thesis will briefly introduce the traditional comments on the The Great Gatsby in the literary world, including Fitzgerald’s view on women and Nick’s perspective of female characters. Then it will try to examine the applicability of feminist literary criticism to The Great Gatsby and reinterpret the three female characters from the angle of the microscopic theory of feminist literary criticism
