ABSTRACT
This thesis focuses on the initiation theme in Toni Morrison’s The Bluest Eye, namely the impact of family and community values on black girls’ growth.
Based on the different impact of familial and communal values on the two main characters, Pecola and Claudia’s growth, the main analysis of the paper will be divided into two parts. The first part will analyze the different family backgrounds of the two girls through comparing the basic conditions, parental love and sisterhood. The second part will reveal the damaging impact of internalized racism on the growth of the two girls, particularly on the growth of Pecola through analyzing the dominant white community values and internalized black community values. Eventually, the thesis proves that different family and community values have greatly affected the growth of Pecola and Claudia and brought about their different destinies: whereas one becomes a victim, the other becomes a survivor, a messenger of hope.
The significance of this thesis is to emphasize the crucial roles family and community play in the black girls’ growing up. Besides, the thesis is helpful in understanding the hardship of black girlhood, a marginal group living in extreme complex and poor environments and in comprehending the writer’s concern for the black adolescent as well as the black nation’s future.
