1 Introduction
Great Expectations stands as one of the most enduring and resounding novels of satire ever written. Moreover, Charles Dickens is a genuine master who is brilliantly expert in the realm of satire literature. It is believed that satire is always a critique of some form of human behavior, vice, or folly, with the intent of persuading the audience to view it disdainfully and thereby encourages a degree of social change.
By carefully searching and seeking for the relevant papers and analysis on satire, the author finds that diverse scholars hold various opinions about satire. Some of them draw attention to its narrative method, the core of the story and some concern about how Dickens applied satire to make the theme of the story more persuasive and convincing. Hornbeck states that Great Expectations is probably the most visible sign of Dickens’s commitment to intricate dramatic symmetry and fascinating motif of doubles that runs throughout the book. Hornbeck mentioned that Dickens’s remarkable skills of putting satire on social evils and his strong sense of justice attract many followers to put weight on his ideological content. It is his deep observations that make his characterization penetrate the reality of the society in story.
