Abstract
Ernest Hemingway and Katherine Mansfield are two distinguished writers in their own countries. Hemingway is an important representative of American modernism novelists. His four novels and a variety of short stories make great contribution to American literature. Besides, his feminist consciousness is an important subject of critics’ research. Mansfied is a famous writer in English modernism literature. Meanwhile, she is the founder of New Zealand literature. Mansfied’s achievement lies on short stories. She is considered as a feminist writer whose feminist consciousness can easily be found in her works.
Hills Like White Elephants is a short story written by Ernest Hemingway in 1926. The story, told generally through dialogue, is a conversation between a girl and an American man waiting for a train in Spain. Ernest Hemingway inputs his feminist consciousness in this short story though the conversation between the hero and the heroine. A Dill Pickle is Katherine Mansfield’s short story written in 1917. A Dill Pickle is about the encounter of a woman named Vera and a man who she loved six years ago. This story which is based on Mansfield’s own experience reveals Mansfield’s feminist consciousness through the heroine’s mental activity.
Hills Like White Elephants and A Dill Pickle are two short stories written by authors of different nations and different genders. Previous studies about the two works mainly focus on either the writing strategy or the two writers’ feminist consciousness reflected in the stories on the side of female characters. Only a few researches pay attention to the male images in the stories. This thesis aims to make a comparison between the male images in Hills Like White Elephants and A Dill Pickle from the perspective of feminist literary criticism, which may provide a comprehensive understanding to the two short stories.
