Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Background of the research
“Reading makes a full man”----it is said by the famous philosopher Bacon.Obviously, reading is a necessary element in our daily life. We read newspapers,books and so on every day. Reading is the most useful way for people to acquireknowledge and information in life and work. Actually reading comprehension is aprocess, in which we would get to know the meanings of words and then deal with theinformation we have acquired. However, for students, it becomes one of the mostdeterminants in getting high scores in examinations.In the process of English learning, the students would come into the newlanguage learning situation with keen interest. As the English learning processcontinues, the students began to develop into two different extremes, and this kind oftendency becomes more serious when they come to senior high school. Some studentslose learning interest and confidence gradually and then their English level becomesworse. In this way, the unsuccessful learners in senior high school come into being.At present, the students in senior high schools are very busy learning differentcourses so that their spare time is limited. Also, the unsuccessful learners do not havethe particular language environment for English learning, and their awareness oflearning strategies is not strong enough. In such kind of English learning circumstance,the unsuccessful English learners could not learn English well by themselves, and thisrequires the teacher should instruct the unsuccessful learners systematically and makethem acquire some learning strategies especially reading strategies for Englishlearning, and help improve their ability of self-learning.

1.2The purpose of the study
In China, it is stated by the current Middle School English Curriculum Standardsthat the purpose of teaching reading is, first of all, “to train students to read moreefficiently and to develop students’ appropriate habit and strong interest in reading”.And the English courses in high school should focus on improving the students’ability to obtain English information, deal with information, analyze and solveproblems. Also, it has been proposed that the standard requirements for high schoolstudents' reading skills require students to obtain and process the main message fromthe general articles, understand the main idea of the article and the author's intentions,guess meanings of the unknown words through the context and sentence structure,predict the development of the plot based on contextual clues, and use differentreading strategies for different reading purposes. Both teachers and students in seniorhigh school realize that English reading is so important that they spend a lot of time aon it. It becomes the teachers’ first concern to foster students’ reading ability and thefocus of the English instruction is developing their competence as well as the mainpart of the students’ performance. But in ability, some students show little or noimprovement in reading after they have learned English for five or six years, and,what’s worse, they are getting tired of learning English.
