1.1 Background of the Study探讨背景

There is no denying that variouscultures are far more accessible to Chinese than ever before, and intercu】tura】communication becomes one of the most prominent and important activities in thetwenty-first century. Simultaneously, failure and understanding are also multitudinousin these intercultura] contacts because of cultural differences.In addition,英语论文,nowadays English, as a lingua franca of the whole world, has takenthe role of intemationa] cormnunication tool and has walked into and influenced theprocess of the college English learning in various cultural factors. What is more,cultural factors, sometimes as the barriers of college English learning, especially ofthe college English reading, need further study.In recent years,a large and still increasing number of Chinese students arestudying English with great enthusiasms. However, English, as the second language,is, to some degree,difficult for our students to leam and to master as well as thenative users. So, the difficulties in reading, listening, speaking and writing are thegreatest points to conquer. In this thesis, I pay more attention to the barriers of collegeEnglish reading. However, little attention has been paid to the cultural factors in thebarriers of college English reading. As a matter of fact,students, while readingEnglish passages, texts and even the news papers and western magazines, areundergoing major cultural and developmental changes, especially when they areadapting to a sharply different culture from their native culture. It is significant torealize that some cultural factors are influencing English reading process.Understanding the complex relationships between some cultural factors,Englishreading and English reading barriers can throw more light on the teaching of foreignlanguage, especially the college English reading,英语毕业论文,and culture in China and helpdevelop adequate intervention strategies as well as adequate English reading trainingprograms. Therefore,there will be a need to start a research project to investigate thereading strategies and models of Chinese college students and to understand factorsassociated with cultural factors that influence their choosing of various strategies.
