  作为语言教学的一个方面,词汇教学的广泛认可,最关键的一步,使人们掌握了一门语言的最基本的元素。因此,词汇教学应该贯穿于语文教学的全过程。一般来说,大学英语教学中心的教学精读,因此它已成为英语教师如何处理之间的联系,词汇教学和课文教学的痛苦和混乱的问题。As one aspect of the language teaching, vocabulary teaching is widely recognizedas the most crucial step and makes people master the most basic element of a language.Therefore, vocabulary teaching should run through the whole process of languageteaching.Generally speaking, college English teaching always centers on the teaching ofintensive reading, so it has become the agony and confusing problem for Englishteachers how to deal with the relationship between vocabulary teaching and textteaching. Traditionally, there are two basic methods to deal with new words in the text:one is teaching vocabulary before the text explanation. The advantage of this methodis that students can concentrate on words better then consolidate these words whenencountering them in the text learning later; its major weakness is the lack ofrelationship among new words, and students will feel bored and forget parts of newwords when learning the text, especially in the case of the large number of new words.Another method is teaching vocabulary in the process of text explanation; itsadvantage is that it can make the students leam to understand the words' meaning inthe context, which is necessary for improving the ability of reading and listening; itsmain shortcoming is that the process of text explanation and reading may beinterrupted sometimes and it goes against the understanding of whole text.However, the two methods above both are not satisfactory ways of teachingvocabulary. As a matter of fact, we all know that the right way of masteringvocabulary is to study by using it. Only by learning and using it in many times,andalso relating the input and output of the language closely,could learners finallyimprove the language application ability. “To develop learner's communicativecompetence comprehensively, we must adopt a method of vocabulary teaching whichcan make the language knowledge and language application ability get synchronousdevelopments" (Li Hong, 2017, p. 62). Therefore,it becomes a worthy inquiring taskto find out such a vocabulary teaching method in the college English teaching.At this moment, one kind of education idea — Whole Language Approach —comes into our eyes. It considers that language is an entirety and emphasizes theentirety of language teaching's content, the entirety of language skills and language'scommunicative function (Wang Yan,2017). As a student-centered approach, it focuseson cultivating students' comprehensive language ability and making the students notonly master the language accurately but also use it flexibly (Gu Lifen, 2017). If thiseducation idea is penetrated in the vocabulary teaching, it should be a great help tochange current difficult situation in vocabulary learning for majority of students.Furthermore, multimedia has become an important teaching device in schoolsnowadays. Therefore, this paper aims to explore a vocabulary teaching modecombined with multimedia technology and ideas of Whole Language Approach.
