Noun phrases, whose flexible and complex structures are contributing factors to providewide range of information, play a significant role in various linguistic forms like semantic,syntactic and pragmatic forms. The importance of noun phrase spurs linguists' interest totake deep exploration of noun phrases from different perspectives. Abney,英语毕业论文,(1986) discussedthe characteristics of noun phrase; Quirk et al, (1972) divided noun phrases into severalclassification. Fries(1952) took the study of noun phrase on grammar and syntax levels,Andrews(1985) searched into the noun phrases at the levels of semantics, Fraurud,(1992)and de Haan (1989) studied noun phrases at the levels of discourse and corpus linguistics.Biber et al (1999) divided noun phrases into two kinds concerning the narrow sense andbroader sense of which the narrow sense of noun phrase means noun phrase is onegrammatical unit including head, with or without determiners and modifiers. However,compared with abundant studies on the noun phrase characteristics, the inadequacy ofcomprehensive understanding of learner's usage of the noun phrase in second languageacquisition forms the striking contrast.Some experts in China started their researches on learners' use of noun phrase inEnglish writing. Zhao Xiufeng (2017) found that nominal groups in students' Englishwritings with an informal stylistic tendency because Chinese students are influenced bymother tongue. They use pre-modifiers in high frequencies and post-ones in the low amount.Even in the post-ones, the major parts are taken by attributive clauses. Wen Qiufang(2017)initially examined the characteristic of English majors' using of English vocabularies basedon the famous studies in the foreign counties. In her study, three dimensions are involved,such as lexical fluency, lexical variation and lexical breadth, giving the illumination for thefurther study. Through the measurement of these dimensions of the learners' oral production,Wen Qiufang effectively explored the nonlinear tendency of the development of learners'oral vocabulary in three dimensions. From that moment on,other scholars followed WenQiufang's step to get the bottom of Chinese English majors' English writing characteristics.For example, Wen Qiufang ’s student Heng Renquan(2017) searched out Chinese Englishmajors' use of verb patterns by adopting these dimensions. Under this framework, HengRenquan successfully established another model with three dimensions: verb phrasecomplexity, verb phrase variation and verb phrase accuracy, being considered as threeimportant dimensions to examine and investigate the quality of the oral and writtenproductions. With his new dimensions, Heng Renquan came upon that the trends of changesof learners' use of verb phrases followed the multidimensional form. Recently,Ma Dongmei(2017) conducted one complete and comprehensive study with significant relevance toHeng's study, looking at the changes of Chinese English majors' use of noun phrases in theiroral production in three dimensions: noun phrase complexity, variation and accuracy.
