Chapter 1  Introduction
Tense of the English verb serves as an integral grammatical category in English grammar. Traditional studies on tense focus only on time level, holding that there is a one-to-one correspondence between tense and time. Some believe the present tense expresses present time while the past tense expresses past time. However, this view cannot account for the different uses of the English tense. The contradictions between the grammatical meanings of tense and the uses of the inflectional endings make the understanding of tense even more difficult. Traditional grammarians only describe the various uses of tense without elaborating why they can fulfill such functions. As a result, both learning and teaching regarding tense becomes more complicated.
From a cognitive approach, great achievements in the study of language have been witnessed in recent years. With the development of modern linguistics, the focus of linguistic studies has turned from description to explanation. Prototype theory sheds a light on polysemy in lexical semantics. Metaphorical mapping has tackled the problem of the different uses of English tense. From the perspective of prototype theory and metaphorical mechanism, this thesis attempts to study the nature of English tense, and to provide motivations for the enlargement of the meanings of English tense. On this basis, the writer tries to narrow down the system of English tense.
      This thesis comprises six chapters.
The first chapter is an introduction to the previous study on English tense, andthe research perspective and components of this thesis are outlined.
The second chapter gives a brief literature review of the study on tense of the English verb. By introducing previous views on the tense of English verb, the writer makes comments on them and points out that English has only one tense tense. At the end, the significance of uni-tense view is presented. resent
The third chapter provides the theoretical framework.  Both philosophical theory-Duration and cognitive theories一Prototype and Metaphor are located in this chapter to support the uni-tense view. What is more, the silent language-space is introduced to explain how politeness meets its purpose.
The fourth chapter interprets the English tense from a cognitive perspective. The nature of tense is clarified in order to claim that there is just one tense in English. The  present-connective  tense  is  a  grammatical  category  which  expresses connectiveness between the action or state and its Reference point in time or in psychology.
