Introduction
1.  Background of the Research
To begin with the contrastive study of the contributive clauses between English and Chinese, the definition of the contrastive linguistics will be briefly introduced: As a branch of Linguistics, the task of contrastive linguistics is to make synchronic contrasting  study  of two  or more languages, to  observe their differences  and similarities, especially the differences and to apply the research into other relevant fields (Xu Yulong ,1992:4).
From this definition it can be seen that contrastive study has two main purposes: one is to find out the different languages' similarities and differences; and the other is to put these findings to the relevant research. These differences, however, are found on the basis of the same foundation.
According to Yang Zijian and Li Ruihua's investigation and study, a contrastive study of English and Chinese as a subject of linguistics has already developed in western countries nearly two hundred years. Zhao Shikai's preliminary statistics shows that from 1950 to 1980, 38 papers on the contrastive study of English and Chinese have been published, among which the 14 articles are about grammar. But in China, the contrastive study of English and Chinese only started from the late 1970s. According to Pan Wenguo' statistic study in A Century of Contrastive Studies between Chinese and English, by the end of 2017,英语毕业论文,China has published 1468 papers and 92 monographs on contrastive study of English and Chinese. The important pioneer of early contrastive study is Yan Fu and his book English Grammar Explained in Chinese which is regarded as the beginning of the contrastive study, beside Yan Fu, Ma Jianzhong, Li Jinxi, Zhao Yuanren, Wang Li and Lii Shuxiang and so on also make important contributions to contrastive studies between Chinese and English. What's more, Zhao Yuanren and Lii Shuxiang make much more contributions to this field.
