Chapter One Introduction


1.1 Background of the Study
To narrow the development gap between east and west, China implementeddevelops-the-west strategy in 2017. Since then with the national strong support,economy and society of Qinghai province have grown quickly. Because of thegeographic character and climate in Qinghai province, Xining, the capital city, thecenter of economy and culture, has been developing even more quickly. ThereforeXining is becoming more livable and drawing more people to buy houses fromcounties and live here. As Xining has the best education, kids prefer to follow theirparents and receive education here, especially these who failed Senior Middle SchoolEntrance Exams at their hometowns. But now the educational resources in Xining arenot enough for local students. Now the average numbers of students in state-middleschools are more than 60 while according to the national standards, in a class at most45 students are allowed which shows that explorations of the state educationalresources in Xining have reached limit. In response to this challenge, the governmentof Xining encourages development of private senior middle schools.As a result, in recent years private schools are expanding quickly and vigorously,but unfortunately there are not enough qualified teachers to support the developmentof private senior middle schools. And very few researchers pay attention to theproblems existing in the fast development of private senior middle schools. Accordingto the author’s survey on two private senior middle schools, it was found that bothstudents and teachers had various problems, especially in English teaching andlearning. Teachers had little knowledge of theories of teaching approaches and lackedthe abilities to apply them in their teaching classes. Meanwhile, students’nonintellectual factors were not promoted and contributed little to English writingability. However, English is one of three compulsory subjects for NationalMatriculation Entrance Test. And private senior middle schools as a supplementarybut indispensible part to middle education of Qinghai province should have deservedmore attention from people than they actually are getting now.

1.2 Purpose of the Study
It’s not rare to see in many schools that teachers use the most popular teaching approach or the approach reducing teachers’ teaching burden. Actually the teachingmethod should match the students’ specific requirements. Through the questionnairesand scores to understand students’ writing levels and learning conditions, and on basisof the analyses on English teaching and writing problems, the author introduces theIntegrated Approach into the English writing classes accordingly. As comprehendingthe theories and characters of the Integrated Approach, the author adjusts the teachingprocedures, consisting of standard oral English teaching and Skehan’s model to maketeaching for English writing more comfortable and easier for the students in Class11&12 in Qinghai Siyuan Middle School. In the process of teaching English writing,the author will train students’ spoken English first, and then writing ability. Oldknowledge will be reviewed through the students’ speaking and new knowledge willbe presented in a mild way to release students’ psychological pressure.
