Chapter 1 Introduction引言
1.1 Background of the study
There is no doubt that English has become the language which is mainly used incommunication around the world. Besides China, many countries have made Englisha second or foreign language which must be studied since even primary school. Inrecent years in China, many people are crazy toward English, treating English as agateway to education, employment and social prestige. Xu, a famous linguist in China, notices that the learning of English is valued more in China than Mandarin Chinese, mostly because English skills are better appreciated in the job market (Xu,2017).However, a new problem ----the neocolonialism is raised from the dominance ofEnglish worldwide. According to Guo and Beckett (2017),the already powerfullanguages, such as English, will definitely be a threat to the disadvantaged andpowerless ones. Although all the languages in existence are said to be equal, manyobjective reasons, such as economy and politics, make the equality impossible. TakeEnglish as an example, the powerfiilness of America in both economy and politics is amain reason contributing to the popularity of English. What must be pointed out isthat language and culture are inherently related which means the culture will alsogreatly influence the language learners. Therefore,it is not difficult to understand whywestern culture is popular around the world, especially among the young generationsin many countries. In China, many scholars have also expressed their concern about theover-emphasis of English learning and the ignorance of Chinese to some extent. Mingand Liu (1997:80) point out that although the enthusiasm for English is helpful forimproving English competence, it will cause negative influences on the study of othersubjects as one's energy is limited. Another important issue which has aroused theconcern of many researchers is the influence on people's cultural identity. Youngstudents are easy to change their views toward things, which make them tend toaccept new things and ideas willingly. As mentioned above, alongside the language, the culture will also be immersed into the country. He (2017) thinks that theover-emphasis on English has been weakening the national pride and confidence ofChina, meanwhile, the crazy zest has made many Chinese people question theirnational identity. According to an investigation done by Wang (2017), it can also befound that young college students will feel confused when the two differentcultures一English culture and Chinese culture appear together. In the investigation,Wang found many obvious problems related to the young college students' culturalidentity. For instance, many participants complained that they sometimes got lost afterthe comparison of the world outlook in English and Chinese culture. And if we turnthe attention back to the language learning classroom, the fact is that English cultureinput is much more than that of Chinese culture. Therefore, English and its culture, tosome extent, has been a threat to Chinese and Chinese culture. In the 1980s,英语毕业论文,a new subject一 Intercultural Communication was introduced toChina.
