Autonomous learning is a major focus in the field of second language teaching in recent years and is anecessity for personal development and social development. We are entering the era of knowledgeeconomy from industrial economy. Knowledge economy is changing our social life in every way, whichdemands people to constantly learn to keep up with time in order to deal with the new things, newsituations and changes in their whole life. Norman Longworth and W.Keith Davies (1996) declare thatpeople can’t cease learning all through their life because they should meet the needs of the life, andlearning is becoming the means for a living. According to Piaget’s (1997) interactionism, learning takesplace when learners actively construct their own understanding and knowledge through their interactionwith the world around them.All those views indicate that people need to have autonomous learning ability and manage to uselearning strategies to survive in this information explosion era. However, our traditional foreign languageteaching is characterized by the teachers’ dominance of the classroom activities and the students have novoice over goals, contents, strategies and outcomes related to teaching and learning. Learners have todepend on the teachers and passively accept the knowledge they are delivered. This kind ofteacher-dependence would stop the students from finding out the meaning of learning and taking control oftheir own study. They are not given the right to reflect on why they should learn and how to plan their study,monitor learning process, and use learning strategies to facilitate their study. Therefore, it indicates thatEnglish teaching which costs much time but gets low efficiency is in great difficulty and the teachersshould set the stage for students to cultivate their autonomous learning ability. Pang Weiguo (2017)confirms that junior middle schools don’t attach enough importance to develop students’ autonomouslearning skills. Ji Kangli (2017) points out that there are many shortcomings in foreign language teaching,for example, students are influenced by the teacher-centered teaching method so that they not only havelittle initiative in English learning but also barely concern with exams.Having been aware of the shortcoming of the traditional Education, our country begin to implementnew English Curriculum Standards which argues that “It is essential for schools to reduce the students’dependence on schools and teachers for their own learning, and increase students’ ability to set and meettheir own learning goals” (The National Ministry of Education, 2017: 25).And it also indicates the significance of autonomous learning and learning strategies. After theimplementing of the new English Curriculum Standards, the students are given more time and freedom tolearn independently and participate in the autonomous learning activities. However, outcomes are far fromsatisfaction. In recent years, research has been focused on learning strategies on college students and seniorhigh students, further research is still required to meet the needs of junior middle school students to assistthem to be autonomous and use learning strategies.
