Chapter 1 Introduction

1.1 Background of the Study 
The focus of this study is teachers’ autonomy support to students. Autonomy support refers to someone’s supportive behaviors on other people’s autonomy. It is a concept from Self-Determination Theory (SDT), which was proposed by Deci and Ryan in almost forty years  ago.  SDT  is  a  theory  belongs  to  psychology,  more  precisely,  positive  psychology. The definition of autonomy support is keeping updating with time going on. But the main connotation is  invariable.  The  authorities offer  a series of  supportive  behaviors  to  fulfill receivers’  autonomy  needs  and  to  improve  their  intrinsic  motivation.  Researches  on autonomy support have a history about thirty years. And now it is still a research focus in western countries. But in China, relative researches are just spring up.  Autonomy support, as a psychology concept,英语论文题目,relates to many field in people’s life. Researchers  have  done  some  relevant  studies  in  the  context  of  school,  family,  clinical areas,  workplace  and  so  on.  A  series  of  empirical  studies  have  shown  that  autonomy support has positive effects in different areas of life. Among these studies, the studies in the context of school occupy an important position in this field. And autonomy support in the  context  of  school  mainly  refers  to  teachers’  autonomy-supportive  behaviors  on  their students.  On  the  one  hand,  a  large  majority  of  the  previous  researches  on  teachers’ autonomy-supportive  behaviors  study  the  relationship  between  teachers’ autonomy-supportive behaviors and other factors, such as students’ motivation, academic emotions, engagement and so on. Most of the studies are conducted from the perspective of students. On the other hand, during initial period, most of the researches in the context of school are conducted in PE class. Recent years, some researchers start to turn to other subjects,  for  example,  mathematics.  But  teachers’  autonomy-supportive  behaviors  in English  class  have  not  been  systematically  studied.  As  we  all  know,  English  is  a  very important  subject  in  senior  high  school.

1.2 Significance of the Study
Based on the background information, the starting point of this study is to improve English teachers’ skill of stimulating students’ autonomous learning. The ultimate goal is to  improve  senior  high  school  students’  autonomy  in  learning  English,  so  as  to  improve their autonomous learning in other subjects.
