1.1 The Background of the Research
With the coming of the 21st century, the issue of teacher professional development (TPD)stands out and becomes the main focus. President Hu Jintao (2017) declared at the seminar of thenational excellent teacher representatives—teachers are the inheritors of the human civilization.Teachers are the key to promote the sound and rapid development of the cause of Education andcultivate high-quality talents. Where there are no high level teams of teachers, there is nohigh-quality education. To some extent, the development and progress of schools depend on thequalities of teachers. In this sense, it is of high necessity for us to improve teachers’ professionalaccomplishments and attainments. And this issue is supposed to become our constant pursuit in thewhole course of the educational development. Of course, this research topic does come to the mainfocus and field in current research in practice.The English TPD is based on the general TPD. Similar to the general research on generalTPD, the research on English TPD also focuses on the elementary education level, while collegeEnglish TPD has not completely entered into the researchers’ vision. It can be even said that theresearch on college English TPD not only lags behind the national study of higher education, butalso that of foreign language teachers’ education and professional development. Compared to theEnglish-major TPD, the research on college English TPD appears to be relatively marginalized.(Gao Sixia, 2017)

1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research
1.2.1 The Purpose of the Research
On the basis of the above analysis and discussion of the current background and necessity ofresearch on peer coaching in TPD, the thesis, aims to compensate the defect of the previous studyin both research depth and scope. In the course of summarizing the literature, it is found out thatmost of the former study merely lingers in the macroscopic aspect, covering the fundamentaltheory, namely its characteristics, forms, and connotation and so on. Empirical study is also limitedon the level of elementary teachers. Fortunately, the present study begins to transfer its direction toCETs. In corresponding to this tendency, the thesis aims to choose SDNU as one typical case tofind out the real current implementation situation, potential factors accounting for that situationand the possible strategies to help it run better and more steadily. Detailedly speaking, the thesis, inthe first place, intends to research the implementation of peer coaching, from the perspective offrequency, forms, contents, purpose and coachers; then, the potential reasons for the currentsituation mainly entailing teachers and the main surrounding they are faced with----colleges itself;lastly, the corresponding strategies reacting to the reasons found out are put forward to used forReference of other research.
