1.1 Background of the Research
The world needs more and more communication and the business field is not anexception. In the stage of “Global Village”,more and more enterprises and companiesexpand their activities across the borders and engage in international trade. Businesscorrespondence is one of the main media involved in the international economicactivities and the principal means used by business firms to keep in touch with theircustomers. It is said that approximate ninety percent of business is transacted bybusiness correspondence, from which its importance can be recognized clearly.English is the main tool used in international commercial activities. Most businesscorrespondence and oral transactions are carried out in English, With China's entry intoWTO and the development of foreign trade, there is an urgent nefed for the Chinesebusiness executives to improve their capabilities of writing good English businessletters to carry out international business routine efficiently.Till today, 7Cs, including “correctness, courtesy, consideration, completeness,clarity, conciseness and concreteness,,,英语论文,have been considered as the most importantlinguistic features of EBC and people should strictly follow these rules to avoid vagueexpressions in EBC writing as possible as they can. 1.2 Purpose and Significance of the Research
As is known to all,EBC has been one of the most important communicatingmethods in business field, especially with the rapid development of the internet andworld trade. It serves as a primary communicating tool in every step of businessactivities, from establishing business relations to closing a transaction.The previous studies about vague language are mostly from semantic perspectiveand pragmatic perspective of Cooperative Principle and Politeness Principle,extensively studied in informal conversations, but are seldom discussed in formalbusiness context. Based on the framework of Adaptation Theory and Relevance Theory,the present research centers on the analysis of vague expressions in EBC frompragmatic perspective.The research has both theoretical and practical significance. Theoretically, theresults of the paper are expected to make some contributions to the development ofpragmatic studies about the enrichment of systematic study of vague expressions.Furthermore, this thesis is targeted at vague expressions in EBC,and the notion thataccurate and precise language is preferred in EBC for avoiding misunderstandings will be reshaped since using vague expressions appropriately will lead to smooth businesscommunication and enhance the successful conclusions of business transactions.
