The heroine Scarlett is evaluated as a representative of the New Female. The paper here briefly introduces the development of feminism and connotation of marriage, pointing out the traditional perspective of marriage in the 19th century and women’s status of that time. Then the author elaborates on the analysis of the nature of Scarlett’s three marriages to fully examine the development of Scarlett’s female consciousness in every marriage. The thesis aims to help readers understand how Scarlett grows from a simple-minded and disobedient girl to a responsible woman who is strong-willed enough to pursue her happiness and take various challenges.
