When he meets Mr. Cattazara on his walk, in order to hide his embarrassment and shame and instead desire for Mr. Cattazara’s respect, he insists that he likes to walk and he is waiting for a job while reading a lot from a list of books, maybe around one hundred, in the library to pick up his education. After that, he enjoys the kind appreciation and appraisal from people in his neighborhood as well as his father and Sophie. But such situation comes from his lie and he is not qualified to be treated in this favorable way. When he accidentally meets Mr. Cattazara agai, he still does not admit that he has not read those books and talks back that “Sure. I’m sure. They are fine with all the books coming along. ” It can show the problems in his own behavior and decisions that have partially led to his unsuccessfulness. And on the other hand, his lacking in opportunities can be indicated from his bad family condition. It is described by the author that “His father was poor, and his sister Sophie, who resembled George, a tall bony girl of twenty-three, earned very little and what she had kept for herself. Their mother was dead, and Sophie had to take care of the house”.
