I got a Big Five assessment result, from which I find that I get a moderately high score on neuroticism. I was a very sensitive person and likely to take things in a pessimistic way. After I talked with my parents about my childhood, I found that I found that I met some features of avoidant style child. I would be afraid and upset if my mother left me alone.
The agreeable score is moderately high. Generally, I think the result is reliable. I like making friends and can easily keep a long-term friendship, relatively speaking. I believe that I am becoming a more agreeable person now. I am more tolerant to different opinions or differences because every person has his or her own strength and weakness. Everyone needs to be respected for their difference or even weirdness.
However, I don’t think my assessment of is very accurate. I think the main reason is the different culture, on which the Big Five theory is based. As the textbook states, psychologists have found different dimensions than western-based five dimensions in my country. I was concentrating more on the negative experiences in my person sketch. In a western-based big five assessment, I may show some features of low self-esteem. On the contrary, under my cultural background, unpretentious is considered a good feature, which means people would be favored by not talking about their achievements. Belittling oneself is even appreciated by many people. So I may have avoided mentioning my strength in this self-sketch. In addition, I think I discuss more about my previous personality status in this article. So the result may not reflect my the real me since my personality has greatly changed since high school.
By studying both Anne and my own sketch, I have realized the striking difference between Western culture and Chinese culture, which greatly shape our personality. After analyzing our sketches, I get much better understanding of my personality. I hope I can develop my personality in a good way after the study of theory and the sketch.
