Brokeback Mountain`, directed by Ang Lee, is a monumental film in featuring gay relationship. It’s released in 2017 and has won three awards in the 78th Academy Awards. The movie depicts the romantic and sexual relationship between, Jack and Ennis, two cowboys in the American West from 1963 to 1983. I choose this movie first because of its well-known reputation, but the most important reason is the director’s Chinese identity. I remember when the movie was first released, we didn’t have access to the movie in the theaters because of the non-normative sexuality representation. China has always been strict in censoring medias. So I think it’s worth digging deeper into such a movie, made by a Chinese director. Same sex love still seems weird in Chinese society. In this , I will discuss how the non-normative sexuality is accepted among Chinese audience based on the data. So my interviewees are confined to Chinese people only.
I have interviewed three people for my analysis. It is mainly based on the principle of age during the choosing process. In China, we often employ terms such as “80s” or “70s” to describe a generation. People who were born in the specific period share many common characteristics. For this interview, I picked three people who were born in 1970s, 1980s and 1990s respectively in that the three generations are most likely to show interest in such a movie. The first subject is my heterosexual uncle, who was born in 1972 and now works for the local government back in China. He is very familiar with the movie and has received higher education. I choose him because he is one of the few 70s I know who love watch English movies. I conducted the interview with him by long-distance call and the results were written down only by notes without recording. The second interviewee is my cousin’s best friend, who is five years older than me and now works in China as a businesswoman. She is my most important subject because she claims herself as bisexual, who has relationship with both boy and girl, yet still a virgin. Now she has dated another girl for nearly three years but intends to get married with a man by blind date due to family pressure. She has a Master’s degree. As a 80s person, she has access to the open Western culture but is conservative in many aspects at the same time. So I think she is a best example to reflect the complex mind of Chinese people toward same sex love. Our interview is done with Wechat video without recording based on her own requirement. My last subject is my high school classmate, who is the same age with me(90s) and went straight to work without receiving college education. I choose him because he has received the least Western culture among the three subjects but he is the youngest. Our interview is conducted by Wechat speaker, and there is recording of the interview in my cellphone with his permission.
Each subject is presented with six identical questions (See the appendix). All of them admit that Brokeback Mountain is a terrific movie featuring gay love. Subject 2 and subject 3 thinks that the movie does a good job in depicting the two heroes’ intense love and their helplessness under the social pressure. However, subject 1 contends that the worst part of the movie is the representation of their love. He said that Ang Lee should learn from South Korean directors on presenting gay love in a gentle and intense way. It can be considered good representation only when gay love is presented even gentler than heterosexual love. He also thinks the sexual scene of the movie is repulsive. Subject 2 takes the scene as acceptable but not pleasant while subject 3 take it as normative. When I asked them if Ennis should choose family over Jack, both subject 1 and 2 answered in positive while subject 3 in negative. Ennis’s identity has always been a heated question among the audience, so I also prepared the question for my subjects. Their answers are surprisingly the same, bisexual. My last question is “Do you think Jack’s death is only an accident or the director’s imply on gay love’s tragedy? If the answer is the latter one, then do you think it is intentionally planned that the dead one is Jack rather than Ennis?” Subject 1 answers that Jack’s death is maybe because he is too depressed for not receiving Ennis’s equal love. Subject 2 and 3 provided me with the latter answer and both of them thought the end of the movie was implying the tragic situation of gay people in the society and it is also an intentional plan for Jack’s death since he is the active party in the gay relationship, or in other words, he is more gay than Ennis.
Based on my interviewees’ answers, we can find that subject 1 is most critical of the movie. The response to the sexual scenes as repulsive shows that deep in his heart, non-normative sexuality is unacceptable. Moreover, he believes the movie would be much better if their love is presented in a gentler way. As Padva writes in the article that gay men share a common characteristic of “embracing Straight-Gay Alliance (Padva,157)”and“Many gay men sport beards, army fatigues, work boots, etc. they build up their bodies…(Padva, 158)”. Jack and Ennis happen to fall into Padva’s category. The fact that subject 1 finds the love between them too violent means that he believes gay men should be sissy or feminine. It’s also a stereotypical perspective of the whole society. “They are angered by the seeming focus on feminine gay representations and want to shift the focus to gay men who act just like ‘normal’ heterosexual men,...(Clarkson, 339-340)”. Compared with subject 1, subject 2 and 3 take the non-normative love as much more normative. But subject 2 also thinks Ennis should sacrifice his love for his family, which means that she is much more restricted to the traditional ethic. According to their answers to my last question, subject 2 and 3 shows more concern over gay people’s situation than subject 1 does. Overall, subject 1 has shown the least understanding of gay people while subject 3 shows the most sympathy and believes that they should pursue their own happiness regardless of their families. Subject 2 also shows much understanding but puts priority to her family even if she has a beloved girlfriend.
To conclude, the older the subject is, the less he(she) accepts the non-normative sexuality in the movie. Based on my interviewees’ responses, China still has much difficulty to accept openly non-normative sexuality though many show their understanding.
