Ⅰ. Introduction
Nowadays,英语论文题目,unethical behavior of organizations has becoming a big problem which influences the development of organizations and the interest of customers. The research of unethical behavior of organizations began in 1960s. With the development of economic, competitions between organizations is becoming fiercer and fiercer. As a result, more and more companies act in an ethically questionable manner to win advantages in the competition. Business Ethics Research Center of Bethel University carried out an enterprise survey about industrial and service sectors which belong to Fortune 500. The survey showed that 80% of the companies have unethical behavior in the operation of the company.
This tries to figure out what problems will happen to organizations and its customers if the organizations act in an ethically questionable manner. Firstly, problems will be listed. Secondly, the mechanism of action will be explained. In addition, examples and evidence will be given to support the mechanism. Last but not least, we will draw a conclusion.
Ⅱ.Discourse analysis
A.In my opinion, organizations unethical behavior will affect itself in three ways. Firstly, the performance of organizations will become worse. Secondly, the members of the organization will tend to be dishonest and the public image of the organization will be damaged. Thirdly, it will also do harm to the relation network between the organization and its trading partners.
To analyze concretely, how unethical behavior affect organizations?
1. Baucus and his partner did a research on the long-term effect of unethical behavior. By comparing 188 good companies’ performance with 67 companies existing unethical behavior, they figure out that those unethical companies’ rates of return are quite low and their sales growth become slow after they take unethical actions. Another research carried out by Gunthorpe discusses the short-term effect. He found that if unethical behavior is known by the public, the company’s stock price will decrease 1.3% on the day, and 2.3% after a week. So we can believe that unethical behavior will badly influences organizations’ performance in the market.
2. Unethical behavior does great harm to the public image of the organization. Enron scandal was a case in point. The company was formed in 1985. Several years later, when Jeffrey Skilling was hired, he developed a staff of executives that, by the use of accounting loopholes, special purpose entities, and poor financial ing, were able to hide billions of dollars in debt from failed deals and projects. Chief Financial Officer Andrew Fastow and other executives not only misled Enron's board of directors and audit committee on high-risk accounting practices, but also pressured Andersen to ignore the issues. When the unethical behavior was known by the public, it has led to an irrevocable damage to Enron’s public image.
3. Unethical behaviors do harm to the relation network between the organization and its trading partners. Sullivan and his partners discussed the influence to the relationship network between organization and its trading partners. They figured out that unethical behavior will influence the quality of the relationship network. The company’s position in the industry will decline and its cohesion with other companies will become weaker too. Another research by Hill discusses the buyer’s unethical behavior. It will influence the suppliers’ trust to the buyers. Suppliers tend to supply fewer products to those unethical companies.
B. As for customers, there are mainly two influences. Firstly, their will suffer losses in some kind of ways. In addition, they will tend to buy less products or services from the organization and even suffer a switching cost.
The melamine scandal happened in China is a case in point. In order to achieve more profits, companies which produce dairy products add too much melamine in dairy products to raise protein content. Too much melamine finally resulted in kidney stones. In the case, customers took the bad consequence and what they lost was health. After the scandal, most customers still have psychological shadow about domestic dairy products. As a result, imported milk powder once occupied 90% of the market.
Ⅲ.Conclusion
If organizations act in an ethically questionable manner, it would both do harm to itself and its customers. So entrepreneurs' moral spirit should be advocated to prevent unethical behaviors.
