Consumerism-option 2
Introduction
The is mainly about the topic about consumerism. With the respect to the topic, the author mainly analyzes the option 2. Firstly, the will introduce the attitude to the consumption concept about the first question in the option 2. Then the will discuss the topic with respect to “Black Friday” sales and “Buy Nothing Day”. The containing the two parts in the option 2 will show the author’s attitude to the consumerism. The author of this support the free consumption at one’s own will. No force is imposed on the individual and the purpose of consumption is to get the function of the goods. The author do not advocate unreasonable and excessive consumption.
Body
Firstly, the will introduce the attitude to the consumption concept about the first question in the option 2. I think it acceptable to alter my spending habits and level of consumerism around the holidays. I think two factors can contribute to this. The first factor is to consider my leisure time and emotion during the holiday. Due to the fast development of the economy, the pressure on the work is heavy during the daily life. I hurry up to the work every day. Apart from the time used in the meals and rest, I always have little time to do some shopping. However, the holiday gives me much time to do what I want. Among the things I want to do, I think the consumption during the holiday accounts for a significant proportion. Such us, I can have some coffee in the bars with my friends. What is more, I can do some shopping in the mall to get my favorite clothes and gifts. Moreover, at the end of the holiday, I will prepare some snacks and food for the following workday. Just like what James Livingston said “happy holidays and get to the mall and knock yourself out.” This is why I support the idea that it acceptable to alter my spending habits and level of consumerism around the holidays. The second factor I think is due to the sales promotion during the holidays. As is known to all, the merchants will give many sales promotions to attract more customers to do consumptions with the consideration the much time during holidays of the customers. So I will alter my spending habits and level of consumerism around the holidays. Secondly, the will discuss the topic about the contrary between “Black Friday” sales and “Buy Nothing Day”. As is known to all, the both are on the same day. The origin of “Black Friday” may be from some superstition. Some people think that the wheels of vehicles in heavy traffic on the day after Thanksgiving Day left many black markings on the road surface, leading to the term Black Friday. Some other people think that the term Black Friday comes from an old way of recording business accounts. Many people think it is bad on that day. But it is also a busy shopping day and a holiday to the people in some states. Are they are contradictory? Personally speaking, I think the former “Black Friday” provides a good chance for the shopping. Why? From the text above, I think the “Black Friday” is usually a holiday for the people. So the people will pay more attention and fees to the consumption. But as is known to all, “Buy Nothing Day” is also on the same day. It advocates people to return the value of themselves rather than be kidnapped by the consumption just like what Michael said it would make us more aware of the price we pay for living in a society where everything is up for sale. On one hand, “Black Friday” provide a chance or a holiday for people to consume, while “Buy Nothing Day” advocates rational consumption on the day. From the concept conveyed by the two theory, it seems that they tell two extremes. But I think the “Buy Nothing Day” does not refer to that it stops the people to buy on the day “Black Friday”. It only gives out the meaning that when people do some consumptions, what they should pay more attention to is the value of the goods they buy rather than excessive consumptions. While “Black Friday” is a holiday to the public and on the day the people can do some shopping without consideration about what the economists, journalists, and politicians would have you believe. Just like what James Livingston said, consumer culture is what you do when you’re off the clock, at your leisure. So if you have time on the day “Black Friday”, you can accept the concept “rational consumption” conveyed by “Buy Nothing Day” to buy what you need and like. So I think the consumption is based on rational consumption and the comprehension of the goods.
Conclusion
To sum up, I think the consumption is free for each individual without any force imposed on the individual. Each individual can alter their habits or the spending on the consumption based on their time and incomes. No standard in the consumption is designed to for the public. What the customers should do is to understand the true function and value of the goods they buy. At some time, the individual can do some premature consumptions due to some reasons. But remember that never do heavy excessive consumptions which make you feel hard to repay.
