“나는 생각한다. 그러므로 나는 존재한다.”라는 데카르트(1596~1650)의 말처럼 인간은 사유하는 존재이며, 인식과 사유의 방식은 철학의 역사적 흐름에 따라 복잡하고 다양하게 변화되어 왔... “나는 생각한다. 그러므로 나는 존재한다.”라는 데카르트(1596~1650)의 말처럼 인간은 사유하는 존재이며, 인식과 사유의 방식은 철학의 역사적 흐름에 따라 복잡하고 다양하게 변화되어 왔다. 산업혁명 이후 근대를 거쳐 현대 사회에 이르기까지 기술적, 문화적 배경 또한 다면화 되고 복잡해지고 있으며, 그것은 인간이 사용하는 기호체계에도 많은 영향을 끼쳤다. 본 연구자는 인간의 삶속에서 매 순간 사용되는 기호체계에 집중하였고, 이를 작품에 활용하여 표현하고자 하였다. 본론의 내용을 요약하면 다음과 같다. Ⅱ장에서는 기호와 기호학의 이론적 배경을 구조주의와 탈구조주의 학자들의 이론적 정립을 토대로 분석하였다. 그리고 이러한 기호적 개념들이 근현대미술에서 어떻게 표현되었는지 고찰하였다. Ⅲ장에서는 텍스트를 이용하는 작가인 브루스 나우먼과 제니 홀저, 재료의 기호적 특성을 활용하여 표현한 신미경 작가의 작품을 분석하여 연구 작품에서 활용한 수사법과의 개연성을 확보하고자 하였다. Ⅳ장에서는 연구자 작품에서 표현한 기호적 수사방법을 Ⅱ,Ⅲ장과 비교하여 분석하였다. 연구자는 본 논문을 통해 작가가 전달할 수 있는 수사의 방식에 대해 고찰해보고, 작가의 메시지가 표현 및 전달되는 과정에서 보다 더 효과적으로 활용될 수 있는 방법들을 확인해 보았다. 작가는 작가이기 이전에 동시대를 살아가는 한명의 사회인으로써, 현시대를 진단하며 발견되는 문제점들에 대해 발언하는 것은 예술가의 본질적인 역할이자 의무이다. 그리고 그 발언은 일방적인 것이 아닌 해석의 가능성을 열어둠으로써, 관객으로 하여금 작가와 동등한 위치에 서서 담론을 만들어 갈 수 있도록 하는 것이 본 연구자가 생각하는 이상적인 공존의 방법이라고 본다.

From the Industrial Revolution to the contemporary society through modern era, technological and cultural backgrounds have also become multifaceted and complex, and it had a great impact on the system of symbol which is used by humans. This research was focused upon the system of symbol that used every minute in human life, and it was expressed through the work. The contents of this study are as follows. In chapter II, the theoretical background of symbol and semiology were analyzed based on the theoretical formula of structuralism and post-structuralism. Also, how these symbolic concepts are expressed in modern and contemporary art were examined. In Chapter III, artists who use texts as Bruce Nauman and Jenny Holzer and Shin Meekyung who expresses symbolic characteristics of the materials are analyzed in order to secure the probability of rhetoric method of the research work. In chapter IV, symbolic rhetorical methods which expressed in the research works are compared with those in chapter II and III. In this study, Rhetorical methods that artist can convey were researched, and more effective methods in conveyance and expression of artists’ message are confirmed. Since an artist is a person who lives in the same age before being an artist, it is an essential role and obligation for an artist to diagnose the present era and speak about the found issues.
