A Study on Knowledge Map of Xita Koreatown and Shenyang Korean Week Festivals Xita Koreatown in Shenyang has been developed from an ethnic Koreans’ enclave to Koreatown because many South Koreans rushed into the place since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Korea. While Los Angeles Koreatown is the largest Koreatown in the U.S.A., the oldest ‘Koreatown’ in China can be said to be in ‘West Pagoda(also known as Xita, in Chinese)’ in Shenyang. Although Koreatowns are formed up in every major city in China and there are more Korean people living in Koreatown in Wangjing in Beijing than in Xita, it does not have as old history as the one Xita has. So, Xita is known as the best and largest Koreatown in China. Centered on the Xita Street, residential areas where ethnic Koreans (a.k.a., Joseon-jok in Korean) and Koreans live are concentrated on both sides. The Korean ethnic enclave in China has been established in a compact mass with the commercial and office areas where ethnic Koreans and Koreans run. In that area, there are North Korean schools, North Korean bookstores, hospitals, and restaurants, while there are also South Korean restaurants, cafes, department stores, and many South Korean organizations that have been actively engaged in Xita. In addition, it is said that there are the most North Korean restaurants in China there. However, since the financial crisis in 1997 affected on businesses, it has happened that South Korean people who had a failure in business in Xita Street have been returning to Korea. There have been many changes with shops and offices in Xita Street. The first Korean food restaurant named Baek-Je Won opened in Xita Street in 1993. Soon Gyeonghoeru and Shillasung followed, while other new korean restaurants mushroomed later, but currently, the street is going through changes. Therefore, it is needful that we should record about not only Xita Koreatown but also the changing aspects that have been made since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Korea. In other words, it is needful that we should digitalize/archive the history and culture resources of the Korean people in Xita Koreatown who are going through the changes. It is because an ethnic town is like an organism and it can change. Ethnic town’s identity could be well manifested in ethnic festivals. Currently, two major festivals have been hosted for the Korean people in Shenyang. One is Chuseok Folklore Festival for Joseon-jok –in –Shenyang -City, and the other one is Shenyang Korea Week. The former has been hosted under the auspices of Shenyang Joseon-jok Association Council and Shenyang Joseon-jok Culture & Art Center. The latter has been sponsored by Shenyang City government and Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Shenyang. Shenyang Korea Week about which the writer tries to record and resource this time has been renamed as “China Shenyang Korea Week cum Shenyang Xita Cuisine Culture Festival” from 2012 and was born anew as Xita Koreatown’s festival for the Korean people, in which Koreans and Joseon-joks mingle in harmony in a true sense, while Department of Social Work and Social Administration for Xita Street at Heping District in Shenyang and Businessmen’s Association of Korean People in Shenyang are jointly hosting it. On the other hand, ‘Shenyang Phenomenon’ that media started to cover since around in 2006 is an attempt to promote co-existence between business and culture, and business and society. It was not just the Shenyang businessmen’s economic activities that supported culture and arts of non government organizations financially, but it become expanded as a harmonious combination of the two societies of ethnic Koreans and the Koreans in Shenyang. Accordingly, it could be said that to research on Xita Koreatown in Shenyang will have a significant implication on other Koreatowns-in-China researches, because as of today, it is thought to be the time to seek cooperation between ethnic Koreans who first settled down there and Koreans who later entered there, and co-development. The Shenyang Korea Week (2002~2015) is annually held in Xita Koreatown under the auspices of Shenyang city government and Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Shenyang. It has turned into a national-level festival that represents well the Korean people’s identity and Korean culture. It has become a role model of other areas’ Korea Week such as Beijing, Qingdao, etc. ever since 2002. Therefore, to collect all the related materials about the Shenyang Korea Week, functions and events in Xita Koreatown and their backgrounds, and the key figures in charge, which would be divided based on the ontology, and to build it as a knowledge map (as a wikipedia publishment and digital culture map) will present a new direction for research on the plans for Korean culture resources. To build a knowledge map of Xita Koreatown could be usefully utilized for the planning of local festivals for Korean communities. It’s because its relations in a knowledge map could be used for a storytelling. Therefore, it can be said that knowledge mapping is an appropriate digital content for setting up a Koreatown.
