이 연구의 목적은 갑자기 찾아올 미래의 통일을 대비하여 진정한 기술 교과의 통합과 교과서 개발을 위한 기초 자료를 제공하기 위하여 남한의 ‘기계의 이해’ 단원과 북한의 ‘기계 기본’ 단원의 내용을 비교하여 북한의 중학교 기술 교과의 실태를 파악하고, 남·북한 기술 교육의 차이점을 살펴보는 데에 있다.
이 연구의 주요 결과를 요약하면, 다음과 같다.
⑴ 남한의 ‘기계’ 관련 단원 내용은 일반적인 소양교육의 성격과 목표를 가진 기본적인 내용을 다루는 반면, 북한은 직업교육의 성격과 목표가 강하며, 보다 세부적이고, 구체적인 내용을 다루고 있다.
⑵ 남한은 기계의 요소에 가장 많은 비중으로 다루고, 체험활동을 중요하게 다룬다. 반면, 북한은 기계의 장치에 가장 많은 비중으로 다루고, 로봇의 개념에서 이용까지 ‘로보트’를 대단원으로 체계적으로 구성하여 로봇의 중요성을 부각시키고 있다.
⑶ 북한의 교과서에 사용된 용어는 약 150개 정도로 남한과 다른 용어를 사용하고 있다. 남한은 순 우리말과 외래어 사용 비율이 3 : 7인 반면, 북한은 5 : 5 비율로 사용한다. 또한 외래어 표현을 영어식과 러시아식, 독일식 표현을 다양하게 혼합하여 사용하고 있다. 그러나 남한에서도 북한의 사례만큼 많지 않지만, 한자어를 순 우리말로 바꾸어 사용하려는 노력을 살펴볼 수 있다.

The purpose of this study was to compare 'Understanding of Machine' unit in South Korea with 'Basic of Machine' unit in North Korea. The actual conditions of subject which were on Technology of middle school in North Korea, and the difference between the two Technology Education have been discussed here to understand the existing situation of Technology Education in South and North Korea, respectively. This research could be provided with basic data to develop a authentic integration of the Technology subject, and to prepare the common-use textbook for the reunification of South and North Korea.
The main results of this study were as follows :
⑴ The unit related with 'A Machine' of the South Korea dealt with a character and object of general technology literacy education and basic concept, while that of the North Korea had a tendency to cover with obviously a character and object of vocational technology education and more detailed and concrete concept.
⑵ In South Korea, the textbook focused on the element of machine, and also emphasized on A Hands-on Activity. In North Korea, the textbook put comparatively a great deal of weight on the equipment of machine, and robot was systematically introduced with the large unit from the basic to application, highlighting the importance of robot.
⑶ There were about 150 different terminologies which were used by the both textbooks of Korea. The terminologies of the South Korea textbook, the ratio of 3 to 7 was the usages of korean : borrowed words, while those of the North Korea textbook, the ratio of 5 to 5 was the usages of korean : borrowed words. Also, instead, it has been using the expressions of borrowed words, mixing various them to those of English, Russian and German. However, the textbook of South Korea didn't have as many cases as North Korea, it sought to turn Chinese characters into Koreans.
