In the information era of the 21st century, a computer occupies a central place in our daily living. With increasing use of a computer, its influence on our life also grows significantly. Now people can easily access the Internet from any place. As the number of Internet users rapidly increases, a new breed of online communication language is emerging, which incurs many problems. The users intentionally distort grammars, and the distorted language exerts its effect outside the online space. The use of particular communication languages widens communication gap between young and old people, leading to a language divide between different generations.
This study examines the characteristics of online communication languages used by young people, and identifies its problems and possible solutions. The objective of the study is to suggest methods to establish a desirable language culture based on a survey and systematic analysis of young people's use of communication languages online.
This study examines online communication languages with focus on the Internet bulletin boards. As users have a chance to double-check their writing and correct mistakes if they want to unlike in a chatting room, the languages used on a bulletin board are likely to show the typical online communication languages. Through a bulletin board, students freely express their ideas without bound by themes or formats.
The study applies academic knowledge on Korean language to analyzing overall characteristics and problems of the online communication languages, and pursues to identify solutions. The following lists the significance and expected contributions of the study.
Firstly, the study identified current condition of language use under varying circumstances of online communication spaces. The distortion of language could be classified into six types: deletion, contraction, insertion of phoneme, grammatic error, use of punctuation marks and emoticons, use of slang, and excessive use of foreign words.
Secondly, the study enabled to analyze the problems of online communication languages in various fields from an objective angle.
Thirdly, the study sought methods to promote use of correct languages on the Internet and in online communications, which included strengthening grammar education in a school, and discussing the issue of online communication languages in a class. The support from the society such as mass media is important as well as education.
Fourthly, the study also explored positive aspects of online communication languages, and accordingly provided a suggestion on how to make use of it. The positive effect of using 'emoticon' is noted that overcomes inability of online communication to convey expressions.
Based on the collected data and analysis, the study identified problems regarding the current status and characteristics of online communication languages, and suggested possible solutions. Although the study noted positive aspects of online communication languages and its potential use, further research is called for. Researches need to continue to study the constantly changing characteristics of the online communication languages.
