The Korean standard language and expressions should be observed as the norm of the nation's linguistic culture. To gain the value of a norm, it is necessary that the Korean standard language and expressions should be understood and applied easily by the public.
In many respects the rules of the standard language and expressions, however, have been pointed out to have the inaccuracy of the contents, the disagreement of the terms, the lack of consistence, their conflict and the complexity. So, in this study, taking these problems into consideration, I have tired to think over the rules of the language and expressions the public can come in contact with easily, and tried ways to improve them.
In the first Chapter, I have mentioned the purpose, the objects, and the method of the study, and then examined the previous researches.
In the second Chapter, I have focused upon the problems shown in the General rules of Korean writing and the writing of loan words.
In the third Chapter, I have investigated the sound system of Korean, placing an emphasis upon platals, diphthongs, and alliterations. Especially the items 10 - 12 regarding the alliterations are somewhat complex, and so I have tired ways to simplify the rules for the public to understand easily.
In the fourth Chapter, I have dealt with several morphems, for instance, the divided writings of word stems and endings, furthermore some problems revealed in compounds using prefixes and suffixes, and shortened words. Particularly like the irregular usage of inflected words in the item 18, we have some disagreements between the rules and school grammar, but we should try to unify them, I think. As in the item 30, I think we should consider the increased use of intervening alphabet 'ㅅ', which is limited only in the case of six two-syllabled Chinese words now, in order to get over the problems related with meaning and sound.
In the fifth Chapter, I have examined the rule of space, depending nouns, nouns representing units, listing words, proper nouns, and special terms, etc. As we know, the conflicts of their rules disturbs the consistence among rules; therefore we need to establish the rules definitely and logically again. As for several assistant inflected words, we have conflicts. In the rules, spacing is applied to certain assistant inflected words in that they are independent words, while in school grammar they are not treated as assistant inflected words. However, in the case of proper nouns we can avoid the confusion because spacing is applied to them in that the first names and the last names are respectively regarded as independent words. I think we should include some other rules but these among the main rules.
Finally, the rules of the language and expressions for the general people should be simple, consistent, and logical so that they may obtain value as a norm. In this study I have tried researches and ways to improve the rules in many respects for the general people to understand them, and use the language and expressions easily. I expect that we will inquire into the rules and discuss the problems widely and actively; then the rules will be much better and in the long run will help the public use the language correctly, I believe.
