To Know the vocabulary is indispensable to learn a new language and to express one's opinion in that target language. To be successful in a foreign language it is important to select the essential words among a great deal of words and to arrange them systematically. So to learn a new language requires us to be able to select the correct words and use them in our life.
This study is based on the fact that the vocabulary words of English textbooks are selected by considering frequency and distribution. In this study I compared the basic word list of the 6th curriculum with the 7th curriculum, and I analyzed words from English third and fourth grade textbooks. This analysis was done with the part of frequency and distribution.
And the results are as follows:
First, the basic word list of the 7th curriculum reflected frequently used words and some authoritative authors' words, such as Thorndike first 1,000 words, Basic English 850 words, and Palmer first 1,000 words than the 6th curriculum.
Second, the textbook of the third and fourth grade fully reflected the basic words suggested by the curriculum.
Third, the words of the English third grade textbook were arranged by considering frequency and distribution, but the words of the English fourth grade textbook were not.
As the words are the most basic thing in communication, it is important to teach frequently used words and function words in the early stage of learning language. And these basic words are arranged by considering frequency and distribution to learn words naturally. So I suggest textbook writers for elementary schools should make an effort to select words with which children can build the foundation for English communication, considering word frequency, distribution and repetition.
