Kim, Jong-sam, born in 1921 at Eunyul, Hwanghae-Do had lived a poet for a little over 30 years to die in December 1984. He presented a unique form in poems and came to realize a subject in the way of his own through three anthologies, 『Twelve musical scales』, 『Poets' school』, 『Anyone asked me』.
Until now the study of his poems has been limited to a fragmentary discussion by a few writers, so it more comprehensive, fundamental study is required. For this reason this study shall bring his poetic values to light through the general investigation of his poem world, which a great part is shaded.
First, I will investigate as it reflectal along with his life and secondly his poetic structure. Through these work I will try to make clear the significance of his poems in the history of Modern Korean poems stream.
The subjects in his poems were formed becase of his personal experience. He who had received unconditional love when young came to have egocentric characteristics and this became the root of nonexistence. His constant attachment to death had resulted from the sense of sin obtained by the experience of the Korean War and his younger brother's death. In his early years he accepted death as horror and sorrow but in his latter period he took it to be an eternal world of peace and rest.
The uniqueness of his poems consists in the deviation from the routine context. The abbreviation of poetic words, the leap of meanings and the arrangement of Chinese letter have brought the effect that extended the poetic reverberation. These kinds of imperfection and breakup are not only the consideration with a view to the structural uniqueness but also the poetic devices which construct the world of poet's own who lost the present world.
Kim, Jong-sam is a poet who has succeeded in putting the whole poem into one image like weaving. The peace of life, the ideal world of sacred and the poet's consciousness longing for the religious world were expressed in the music-inclined images coming from the religious experience of the childhood. However death, the desolate world of disorder and despair were revealed in the words of a thorny land, a wilderness and stones that have devil images.
He especially took care of the selection of the vocabularies when he wrote a poem. He used many music related words in his poems such as musicians, musical instruments and the names of music. He also used the foreign names of persons and places and adopted words which give exotic emotions. And he succeeded in diverting such words as routine words, names, news phrases, specialized words that are generally not proper for the poetic words to the poems. The appropriation of the routine words from the nonpoetic to the poetic played a part to enlarge the concepts of the poetic words.
His individual, unique poems fully made him understood to be a modernist who succeeded and developed the Korean Modernism of 1930's. Compared with the literary coteries' failure of 1950's, he showed the poetic world which had succeded as a modernist.
Kim Jong-sam had lived all his life entirely through the poems and music. As for him music was so important a part as his whole life, so it becomes an absolute factor to account when you study him. In this study it has not been dealt deeply about it and I put it off for the future subject.
