Objectives The Temporal Experience of Pleasure Scale (TEPS) is a measure of individual’s trait component in both anticipatory and consummatory experiences of pleasure. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the TEPS (K-TEPS) and to apply the K-TEPS in examining the characteristics of pleasure in the Korean patients with schizophrenia. Design and Methods 129 healthy people and 29 patients with schizophrenia have been evaluated using K-TEPS, Physical Anhedonia Scale (PAS), Social Anhedonia Scale (SAS), Apathy Evaluation Scale (AES) and the Beck’s Depression Inventory (BDI). The exploratory factor analysis was conducted to confirm the factor structure of the K-TEPS. The Split-half reliability, internal consistency, convergent and divergent validity were evaluated. Results The K-TEPS showed good reliability and validity. Factor analysis suggested 2 factor model, consisting of anticipatory and consummatory factor. The K-TEPS scores and anticipatory factor scores in the healthy group were significantly negative correlated with the AES (p<0.01), ASP (p<0.01) and ASS (p<0.01) score, but did not correlated with BDI and BDI-anhedonia score. The consummatory factor scores were significantly negative correlated AES (p<0.01), ASP (p<0.01), but did not correlated ASS and BDI and BDI-anhedonia score. The patients with schizophrenia showed significantly lower K-TEPS (p=0.005), anticipatory factor (p=0.001) and higher AES (p=0.001), ASP (p<0.001), ASS (p<0.001), BDI (<0.001), BDI-anhedonia (p<0.001) scores than the healthy group. The K-TEPS scores in patients with schizophrenia were significantly inversely correlated with the AES (p<0.01), ASP (p<0.01) and ASS (p<0.05) score, but did not correlate with the BDI and BDI-anhedonia score. The anticipatory and consummatory factor scores were significantly inversely correlated with AES (p<0.01), ASP (p<0.01), but did not correlated ASS, BDI and BDI-anhedonia score. Conclusions This study suggests the reliability and validity of the K-TEPS. These results highlight the discrepancy between anticipatory and consummatory factors of experienced pleasure in healthy Korean samples. Our findings also suggest that the K-TEPS may be a reliable instrument in assessing anhedonia as a negative symptom in patients with schizophrenia.
