The purpose of this study is to propose educational methods using the results of the analysis of errors in the use of the adverbial case particles such as '에', '에서' and ‘로'.
For this study, I have checked the occurrences of errors of the adverbial case particles '에', '에서' and 로' appearing through the writings and grammatical test s of Thai learners who are majoring in Korean language at the university level. As the result of analysing, the most frequent errors occurred in '에서‘, followed by '에’ and '로‘. The most frequent errors are replacement with inaccurate adverbial case particles.
The analysis of the writings shows the most frequently committed errors take place when '에‘ and '에서’ are used as the meanings of 'place', error rates are respectively 37.50% and 52.27%, and when '로‘ is used as meanings of 'tools and means'(33.33%). Errors mostly occurred between '에’ and '에서‘ which have similar meanings. The analysis of grammatical test s identifies the most frequent errors in the use of '에' when it is used as the 'cause'(89.6%), 'addition'(85.9%) or 'tools and means'(85.1%); '에서' when it is used in the meanings of 'comparison'(84.6%); and '로' when it is used as 'time'(91.1%), 'qualification'(74.7%), 'direction or path'(70.4%).
Also, error rates in '에' with the meanings of 'place', and '에서‘ with the meanings of 'place' and 'departure point' are comparatively high in the grammatical test s.
Thai learners made numerous errors in the replacement between '에' and '에서' or '에' and '로'. Many errors of '에', '에서' and '로' replaced with '을/를'. The cause of the errors is due to the effect of the proposition ‘ที่(thii)’ in Thai language which can be applied to multiple adverbial case particles in Korean. As multiple Korean adverbial case particles have distinct functions which only exist in one Thai proposition, there is improper distinction between one adverbial case particle from the others in accurate meaning and then errors are made in their replacement.
In addition, as Thai learners do not accurately utilize the use of the Korean adverbial case particles, they make errors by excessively applying the language structure of 'noun/predicate' in place of the 'object/predicate' order of Korean sentences.
This study shows that Thai learners have difficulty in precisely the distinct, meaningful and syntactic characteristics in adverbial case particles '에', '에서' and ‘로' and that these errors continue to occur for Thai learners through out intermediate stages.
To correct these errors, the similarity and differences between '에', '에서' and ‘로' should be reinforced in the learners studies from the initial learning stages focus on their basic meanings and roles. The teacher should assist learners comprehension by adding the other meaning of adverbial case particles such as '에', '에서' and ‘로' in addition to the basic meaning. In summary, this study propose practical examples of teaching method which focus on the basic meanings of '에', '에서' and ‘로' and clear distinctions between them.
The significance of this study is the analysis of the occurrences and causes of errors made with '에', '에서' and 로' by Thai learners. This study may also aid in detecting Thai learners who experience difficulty in the use of '에', '에서' and ‘로'.
